"The Hymns of the Passion and the Resurrection from churches of eastern Thessaly is the first publication by by the Department of Chanting Art and Musicology of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies; a compilation of field recordings by Costis Drygianakis that took place in churches of eastern Thessaly, Greece, between 1991 and 2002. This extremely interesting compilation of hymn focuses on the Orthodox Church chanting tradition of the regional temples of small villages, suburbs and monasteries. These recordings are an original sample of the living tradition of the chanting of the Byzantine tradition, which is almost unexplored and perhaps sidelined academically.
This release consists of a full detailed book of 160 pages, written by Costis Drygianakis and Konstantinos Ch. Karagounis, giving a lot of interesting information about the hymns, the history of the places and the recorded chanters etc. The book is available in Greek language and very soon in English.
It is publisehd by “Ekdotiki Dimitriados” editions and with the kind support of the Moremars, Noise-below and Record Label."
